Furthermore, each upgrade component will require a certain quantity of items to be applied and an initial amount for the equipment.

The Upgrade Station is divided into two slots. On the left side, players can choose to add an item to be upgraded. On the right, previews show what the equipment will look like when it reaches its next level. Pressing the yellow arrow when the player has enough materials will begin the upgrade process.

A piece of equipment can be upgraded up to five times. Each time an item is upgraded, its stats will be increased by a small percentage. The maximum level for an item is 19.

These upgrades can be obtained from a variety of sources within the game, including crafting, bought at the Trading Post or karma vendors, looted from bosses and raids, or dropped from dungeons. Once an upgrade component has been placed in an item it can't be removed and replaced freely, however, the glyphs used in gathering tools can be swapped without restriction.

Upgrades to an item can increase its Mark Level and/or Rarity. Some upgrade components also have additional modifiers that can improve the item's statistics.

For instance, the helm upgrade "Foundation of the Sun" improves base defense, and also gives an additional 20% chance of blocking. The DPS "Wildfire", on the other hand increases damage from weapons.

Certain items are better off being upgraded not so much for their improved stats, but for the fact that it lets players get the most value out of a perfect roll on the item.
